Hand-painted walls instead of wallpaper
Bar concept
idea
I was invited to the project while the building was still under construction. It's a timber-frame house, as is common in America, with a real garage story: the gates roll up and the hall becomes an extension of the street. In a hot climate this is the main scenario.

The ceilings are very high. Fans spin beneath them, moving the air and emphasising the volume.

We argued longest about the walls: should they be dark? We decided to take the risk and painted them. The clients found it hard to imagine anything but wallpaper, but I found an artist who painted the walls by hand. No complicated hanging and no visible seams: just a living mural that holds the whole room together.

How the bar works
zones, counter and light
three zones: coffee, lunch and evening
The hall is divided into three scenarios. On the left is the coffee zone with pink sofas: pop in for a quick bite. In the centre are tables for lunch and dinner. On the right is the evening area: a bar counter and green sofas wrapped in plants. These are cosy spots for groups, dates and long conversations.

The floor is tiled: for a bar it's the most hygienic option.
bar counter: wood, gloss and vintage
The clients dreamt of two things: a bar front in small glossy Spanish Equipe tiles and a counter of natural wood — warm and pleasant to the touch. It was made by their contractor friends.

Behind the counter stands a scarlet vintage cabinet that the guys found themselves. It had to be worked into the interior, and it became the bottle storage and the brightest accent in the room.
light: Vibia on a textile strap
The clients wanted woven basket lamps, but I leaned towards Vibia. They hang on a wide textile strap that carries the electricity itself, so there are no extra wires. The strap looks massive, a little brutal and very decorative, and the shades create an interesting play of colour and light.

Above the counter hang wooden lamps that support the warm wood of this zone.
